A haunting and urgent drama, "FUEGO" examines moral courage, systemic failure, and the lives lost when profit is placed above humanity. The short film is based off of the book "Befallen: The Tragic Hoboken Fires 1973-1982" by Dr. Edwin Duroy. The story follows Delia, a relentless investigative reporter in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1982, who uncovers a chilling pattern behind a wave of fatal tenement fires devastating the city’s Puerto Rican community. As she traces burned buildings back to powerful landlords and developers, Delia pitches an exposé exposing gentrification, corruption, and institutional complicity only to be silenced by editors fearful of controversy and financial collapse. Refusing bribes and intimidation from organized crime figures, Delia continues her pursuit of the truth even as the danger closes in.

Directorial Debut - Milly-May McLaughlin

MMM_2.jpg

Milly-May is a British-American writer, producer, and classically trained actor whose work is rooted in emotional truth and a commitment to telling stories that matter. Having produced and worked on several films, "FUEGO" marks the first time she steps into the director’s chair, bringing a theatrical sensibility and actor-driven approach to the screen. "FUEGO", grew out of discovering the largely erased history of “gentrification by fire” in Hoboken, New Jersey during the 1970s and 1980s, when the Puerto Rican community was deliberately displaced through arson and neglect. After moving to the Hoboken and reading the book, Milly-May felt a responsibility to help bring this underrepresented story to the screen.
